Carl Froch will take another step to solidifying himself as the undisputed number two super-middleweight in the world when he faces Yusaf Mack. Froch will have the hometown crowd behind him as he defends his IBF Super-Middleweight belt in Nottingham, UK this Saturday. This will mark his first fight and title defense since he utterly destroyed Lucian Bute in May.

Yusaf Mack is a solid fighter who will be coming down from light-heavyweight to take the bout. Mack has had title shots in the past but has never been able to cash in yet. In the three eliminator or title fights Mack has had, he has suffered three knockout losses and his only other defeat in his career was also a knockout as well. Needless to say, that is a bad trend for him going into his title fight with Froch. It will also be interesting to see how Mack’s body reacts to the weight cut. This will be the first time since 2007 that Yusaf will be fighting at 168 pounds.

For Froch, this fight is a “keep busy” fight until he has his second fight in his series with Bute which is slated for 2013. That win showed the world he wasn’t damaged goods after his one sided loss to top pound for pounder Andre Ward. It also showcased Froch’s uncanny punching power, which by looking at him you wouldn’t think he would possessed however he owns 21 KO’s to his name.

In this fight Froch just needs to fight smart and not get into a fire fight with Mack. The lone chance Mack has is to turn the fight into a brawl and hope he can hit Froch one time to send him down like Jermain Taylor did. I do see this fight actually playing out similar to the Taylor fight for Froch. If he can work off the jab early and create distance, it will make it easier to pick apart Mack and tire him out in the later rounds. With Mack’s chin being a bit suspect, I’m looking for a late round (7-10) TKO win for Froch. The most important thing for Froch is not to just get the win, but not take much damage in the fight to assure that 2013 will be an even bigger year for him.
