When some fighters are put together you have a feeling straight away that it could be a classic and Ricky Burns v Kevin Mitchell could be exactly that.

The world lightweight title fight between Englishman Mitchell and WBO champ, and Scotsman, Burns has all the makings to be a superb fight. It promises to be a great scrap between two evenly matched fighters. Both are from similar backgrounds, one from Glasgow and one from London’s East End.

Both fighters are on the up and this is the perfect occasion, and the perfect time, from a fans view, for them to fight.

Burns announced his arrival on the world stage when he beat Roman Martinez two years ago to win the WBO super-featherweight title. He defended his title three times before stepping up challenge at lightweight. He beat Aussie Michael Katsidis, who destroyed Mitchell at Upton Park, to win the WBO’s interim crown before being crowned full champion. Mitchell is also on the up after recovering from difficult times.

His world title dream turned into a bleak nightmare back at Upton Park in 2010 when he was stopped in just three rounds by Katsidis. He then went ‘off the rails’ a bit. He stopped training and focused more on going out with mates. But he regained his focus and bounced back in stunning fashion, handing John Murray his first pro defeat.

Mitchell then beat Felix Lora in February and is now ready for the challenge of fighting Burns in his homeland. Granted these two are fantastic fighters but there is another factor that makes this fight a potential classic. There is nothing like a rivalry to heat up a bout is there? And there are few better rivalries than England v Scotland, and there is not a better sport for the rivalry to take place.

England v Scotland, Mitchell v Burns going to war in Glasgow in front of a partisan crowd; it just sounds perfect. This is almost a fantasy fight. September the 22nd is going to special night, a night not to be missed.
